Marketed Superfoods VS Real Superfoods
Let’s talk about SUPERFOODS. I’m sure you hear this term a lot… but do you have any idea what it actually means other than it just being a buzzword??
In reality a superfood is any food with a high nutrient profile. Lately, it seems like every couple of months there’s a new superfood being discovered.
The trendy superfoods that are marketed and promoted typically come with a lot of baggage like sugar or oxalates. That baggage makes this “superfood” NOT a superfood in our opinion.
Here’s a short list of some trendy superfoods that I’m sure you all have heard of…
- Leafy greens (kale, spinach) high in oxalates
- Nuts & Seeds high in oxalates
- Turmeric high in oxalates
- Sweet Potatoes high in oxalates and carbs
- Quinoa high in lectins and carbs
- Goji Berries high in lectins and sugar
- Acai bowls high in sugar
Do you guys force yourself to consume any of these because you heard it was super healthy? Well, we’re here to let you know that you no longer need to since the damaging baggage make them not so healthy. We’ll explain this a bit further below.
There are foods out there that don’t have any of this nutritional baggage and are nutrient dense AF! Below is a list of REAL Superfoods. These foods are powerhouses of nutrients and come with little to no nutritional baggage.
- Red Meat
- Liver & other organs
- Bivalves (oysters, clams, mussels)
- Bone Broth
- Avocados
- Eggs
- Probiotics (sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, yogurt, etc…)
You’re probably wondering, how is it possible to have red meat, organs, and seafood at the top of the list??
What about cholesterol, red meat gives you cancer, etc… right?? It’s TOO big of a topic to get into in this post but You can read more about cholesterol here.
To sum it up, cholesterol is good and actually helps boost your immunity! The red meat causes cancer claims are just ridiculous. We’ve been eating meat since the start of our evolution, why would it cause cancer now? It wouldn’t.
fWe’ll discuss cholesterol next week, it’s Gui’s favorite topic so we may need to break it into several different posts.
Back to the superfoods, so why is this list more powerful than the previous list? Let’s show you…
Check this out! The darker orange is the winner of that category. The lighter orange is second place. As you can see, nothing quite beats liver and steak!
You’ll see that our trendy superfood kale wins in calcium; but remember when we said it comes with baggage? One of its baggage is called oxalates and it prevents the full 72 mg of calcium from being absorbed by our body. On paper, it wins; but when we factor in bioavailability then beef and liver take the top prize.
Meat is the most bioavailable way to get your nutrients and all bioavailability means is the body’s ability to absorb the nutrients in any given food.
To summarize, meat is your friend in your healing journey.
When you add these REAL superfoods to your daily life you will be supporting your healing body and building a better immune system! And we all that NEED right now.
We haven’t been sick in over 3 years now (thank goodness). This wasn’t always the case, we both used to get sick (colds, flu, sore throats, etc…) multiple times a year and we thought it was totally normal. Our normal now is that we don’t get sick and we get to use our sick days at work for fun days!
Download our grocery list here! This is an extensive shopping list that we have approved for all of our clients to promote healing (generally). We list net carbs, fiber, AND Toxicity Levels for each item! We’re super proud of it, and haven’t seen anything like it out on the internet. Get it here!
