Low Carb Alcohol
We always get asked, is alcohol okay on this way of eating? The answer is yes in very limited quantities, but it comes with a caveat. Alcohol really has no place in a human diet! When we consume alcohol our bodies cannot store it so it needs to process it immediately. This means that ALL METABOLIZING of other foods STOP and gets STORED AWAY as FAT.
By consuming alcohol, you are REALLY delaying your results!
Hard Liquor
This is the absolute best option if you need to drink alcohol. Everything under this category is ZERO carbs.
- Whiskey
- Bourbon
- Tequila
- Rum (make sure there’s no added sugar)
- Vodka
- Gin
- Brandy
Be careful what you mix with these. The best options are neat or on the rocks, but lime, lemon, carbonated water is ok too. Be careful with Tonic Water as that sometimes has sugar in it.
Wine
Dry wines are your best bet for low carb wine. A glass of dry wine will be anywhere from 2-5g of carbs/serving depending on the brand. Best wine types to have:
- Sauvignon Blanc
- Brut Champagne
- Prosecco
- Pinot Grigio
- Chardonnay
- Merlot
- Pinot Noir
- Cabernet
- Syrah
Below are some brands that we recommend that are known to be lower carb options
- FitVine: fitvinewine.com (Also at Whole Foods)
- Dry Farm Wines: dryfarmswine.com
- Usual Wines: Usualwines.com
Beer
Beer is the worst option to drink; remember beer is “Liquid Bread”. It’s made with grains and grains are highly inflammatory. If you still NEED a beer, below are the best option with the carbs/serving
- Corona Premier – 2.6g
- Busch Ice – 4.2g
- Miller Lite – 3.2g
- Michelob Ultra – 2.6g
- Budweiser Select 55 – 1.9g
Something else to note as you continue your low carb journey; your tolerance to alcohol WILL DECREASE so be careful when consuming; it may hit you way differently than what you’re used to!
