What should I eat if I get sick? What should I eat to prevent getting sick?

 In Rewind

‘Tis the season for the flu, cold and other nasty things flying around in the cold air. We often get asked, “what should I eat when I’m sick??”

Well, most would say just make sure you stay hydrated with electrolyte drinks like Gatorade or Vitamin Water. Please stay away from these when you are sick. While the idea is correct that yes you do want to keep up with your electrolytes, Gatorade and drinks like it are NOT the way to fuel your body for battle against your cold.

Sports drinks, vitamin/electrolyte water, green and fruit juices are filled with sugar and if you have been following us, you know that sugar is not going to help you AT ALL. Sugar and chemicals are what the typical ingredients are for these drinks and that makes them highly inflammatory and hinders your body’s ability to perform aka fight off whatever sickness you have.

Let’s be on the same team as our body’s and give it the right fuel to do what we NEED it to do! Our favorite to suggest is… drum roll… Bone broth!

Homemade bone broth is THE best solution for your body’s ailments. If you do not have access to homemade then store-bought with the LEAST amount of ingredients is second best.

Bone broth is packed with tons of…

  • Vitamins
  • Electrolytes
  • Amino Acids
  • Minerals
  • Additionally, it is very easy on your stomach (gut)

Here is a recipe for my super simple chicken bone broth that I make all the time in my Instant Pot

Rae’s Simple Chicken Bone Broth Soup

½ Chicken (with organs!)
1 bulb of garlic
2 stalks celery
2 carrots
1 bunch parsley
1 full thumb size of ginger
1 Tablespoon
salt
Water
Shirataki Noodles (optional but highly recommended)

  • Put all items in the Instant Pot – Fill water to right under Max Line
  • Set pressure valve to seal
  • Press Poultry for 15 minutes
  • Remove Chicken and debone, set meat aside
(You can consume now, but we like to add the bones back in and cook some more to make sure we get all the nutrients from the bones)
  • Add chicken bones back into the soup and pressure for an additional 1 hour
  • ENJOY! (with or without Shirataki Noodles)

TLDR: If you’re sick don’t drink Gatorade or Vitamin Water. Drink BONE BROTH. The sugar in the electrolyte drinks or juices will not help your body fight the virus. It will hinder it from fighting it off. Drink bone broth. Recipes above! Make sure you subscribe to our blog to learn about how to heal and protect yourself from getting sick!
